If you could give one piece of advice to your 17 year-old self, what would it be?

“Breathe. No matter what is happening – whether you love it or hate it – it will pass.”

“Don’t be afraid to ask questions.”

“Just calm. Take a few moments. You don’t have to constantly be on. It’s all going to be okay.”

“Try anything.”

“Love yourself, young man…and also, you’re gay.”

“A lot of times what you’re thinking is a little bit hyperbolic. If you think something’s the end of the world, it’s definitely not.”

“It’s great to be footloose and fancy-free.”

“It’s ok to push back. Rebel.”

“Be more loving with yourself.”

“Everyone has a story, [and] it’s up to us daily to create the story we want to write. If you don’t like it, change the script.”

“Get exposed.”

“Enjoy yourself at whatever age you are.”

“Go to New York.”

“You get to be so many different kinds of people throughout your life – you don’t need to feel wedded to a certain image of yourself that you have at seventeen.”

“Let yourself know: you’re smart enough, you’re good enough.”
